The visual arts are a class of art forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and others, that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature.

VISUAL ARTS AND THE EUROPEAN UNION
The Union's action to promote the visual arts is not confined to its own territory. Most of the partnership agreements with third countries contain a cultural element. Under the Cotonou partnership, the Union helps to finance many events in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean in the plastic arts field.

International relations:
The European Union has signed many cooperation agreements with non-member countries all over the world.
Culture is not only one of the most important elements in the economic and social development encouraged by such agreements, it also plays a key role in establishing democracy and stability in these non-member countries.
Indeed, there would be no such thing as peace were it not for intercultural exchange.
The Union also works in conjunction with international organizations which deal with cultural matters, chiefly the Council of Europe and the United Nations.
The Culture 2000 programme also provides funding for European-themed cultural projects (such as festivals and exhibitions) in non-member countries which are not official participants in the programme.
The MEDIA programme supports the distribution and promotion of European films and audiovisual media productions on the international market.
In parallel with these cooperation initiatives, the European Union also plays a role in international negotiations concerning cultural issues.
