DIRECTORATE-GENERAL FOR EDUCATION AND CULTURE.

The Directorate-General for Education and Culture is a Directorate- General of the European Commission. Its aims are : building a Europe of knowledge, developing the European cultural area and involving citizens in European integration.
The six main fields of activity of the DG for Education and Culture are:
1.Education and Training
Education and Training are a primary concern of government in all European countries. The mechanisms for implementing Education and Training policy include: EU funding programmes, Action Plans, Work Programmes.

2.Culture
Cultural cooperation in the European Union has become a community competency since its inclusion in 1992 in the Maastricht Treaty. Culture 2000 is a 7-year European Union Programme which the most important purposes are: to promote a common cultural area characterised by its cultural diversity and to encourage creativity and mobility of artists and public access to culture.The New Culture Programme will take over the current programme, which ends in 2006.

3.Multilingualism
In a Europe which always be multilingual, learning languages opens doors to a better career, to the chance to live, study or work abroad.The European Union wants all it citizens to have access to advantages language skills can bring through the participation in one of the education and training programmes
( Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Tempus).

4.Youth
In the last ten years, many things have evolved in the Youth sector at the European level, therefore the Commission published the White Paper on Youth Policy published in 2001.

5.Civil Society
Promotion of Active European Citizenship- its overall aim is to help bridge the perceived gap beetween the general public and istitutions of the European Union.

6.Sport
The Sport Unit of the Directorate- General Education and Culture is responsible for cooperation within the Commision and with with other institutions, organizations and federations on sport-related issues.
