PRESERVATION OF WORKS OF ART

An important part of the European Union’s cultural activities is geared to the preservation of European heritage. Nowadays, there are many interesting programmes that seeks to improve techniques for preserving works of art. For example: The Culture 2000 Programme or Raphael. These programmes encourage cooperation projects to protect Europe's cultural heritage. What is more, one of the most popular techniques of preservation is photography, which is unique form of expression and a documentary mean. In addition, in 1974, the European Parliment espoused resolution in which Parliament states the need for Community action in the cultural sphere, specially to protect cultural heritage. Besides, since 1993, the Treaty establishing the European Community has provided a legal basis specifically for activities concerning the preservation of cultural heritage. Furthermore, the European Union also takes care of raising awareness of common heritage by different actions and campaignes such as “Europe, a common heritage”. The European Union also cooperates with different international organisations. This cooperation leads to preservation of cultural heritage. There are also several programmes that protect history, tradition or customs of different regions for example: EUROMED, EUMEDIS, URBAN. It is also significant to mention, that since 1986, the European Union has been supporting the biggest international research programme dedicated to damage caused to our cultural heritage by the environment. Finally, members of EU also organise European Heritage Days, which main aim is to raise the awareness of European citizens to the richness and cultural diversity of Europe.
